Woonsocket Councilor Murray running for Senate 24

WOONSOCKET – At-large Woonsocket City Councilor Melissa Murray is announcing her candidacy for State Senate District 24, serving Woonsocket and North Smithfield.

Current Sen. Marc Cote has said he won't run again.

Elected in 2013, Murray is a small business owner currently serving her second term on the City Council. During her tenure she says she has supported several fiscally responsible budgets resulting in tax rate decreases for residential and commercial property owners and bond rating increases for Woonsocket. Additionally, she has supported funding long overdue, financially responsible infrastructure and energy efficiency upgrades that have lowered the city’s bottom line, advocated and supported legislation that expands opportunities for small businesses, and has been a tireless advocate for the promotion and revitalization of downtown Woonsocket.

“I’m pleased to announce my candidacy for State Senate and I look forward to serving the residents of Woonsocket and North Smithfield with the same commitment that I have shown during my five years on the City Council,” said Murray in a statement. “I am eager to put my small business experience to work for the residents of District 24.”

Murray said her dedication to her constituents earned her the position of top vote-getter in her first re-election bid in 2016. She attributed the win to her grassroots style of campaigning.

“I am looking forward to going door-to-door in Woonsocket and North Smithfield to hear residents’ concerns about our state, particularly how the issues that face the residents of North Smithfield differ or relate to the residents of Woonsocket," said Murray. She said she will be discussing her ideas and platform over the course of the campaign.
